Introduction to the Transylvanian Hound

The Transylvanian Hound (Hungarian: Erdelyi Kopo) is among the oldest breeds of scent hounds in Europe. Developed more than 1,000 years ago in the historic land of Transylvania (current day Romania), it was initially created by the Magyar tribes.

Hungarian nobility used these dogs to hunt big game such as boar, lynx and even European bison.

Previously, there were two varieties of the size, but now only the tall one remains. The breed almost became extinct in the 20th century, but due to preservation efforts, the breed was recognised by the FCI in 1968 and by the AKC Foundation Stock Service in 2015.
