Introduction to the Polish Lowland Sheepdog
Polish Lowland Sheepdog, or Polski Owczarek Nizinny, or popularly referred to as PON, is a medium sized herding dog with a very thick shaggy coat and loyal character. It has a strong heritage in Central Europe with parents such as the Puli and the Tibetan Terrier.
This intelligent breed was almost extinct during World War II but was rediscovered in the 1950s thanks to Polish breeder Dr Danuta Hryniewicz and her dog Smok. Every current Polish Lowland Sheepdog is the descendant of Smok, who contributed to the creation of the breed's modern standard. The breed was recognised by the FCI in 1959 and the American Kennel Club in 2001.
