Brief introduction to Kangal Shepherd Dog Breed

Kangal Shepherds, also known as Anatolian Shepherds, are muscular, sturdy dogs of an impressive size. These dogs are known for their loyalty and smartness, and adaptability. These dogs are originally developed for livestock guarding, their primary duty involves guarding the livestock in the absence of handlers, alerting the herd in case of danger, and chasing away potential threats like bears, wolves and jackals.

Let us dig deep into their origin and history in the next section.

Origin & History of Anatolian Shepherd Dog Breed

Kangal Shepherd dogs are one of the oldest known breeds, originally from Turkey. They are also called Anatolian Shepherd and Turkish Kangal dogs. The name is derived from the Central Anatolian town in Sivas Province of Turkey. This region has brutally hot and dry summers and harsh winters with sub-zero temperatures. The Kangal Shepherds withstood those extremities and gained a reputation to be the best guardian dogs. The record of this breed’s presence is found in various ancient books, like the Babylonian Empire's history records the presence of dogs that are similar to the Anatolian Shepherds.

Their history in America began post World War II, the top secret project called the ‘Sheepdog Project’ employed two dogs from Turkey for breeding. However, this project was disbanded, and the Kangal Shepherd dogs were dispersed. The American ranchers then started importing these dogs from Turkey in the 1950s. However, these dogs set a strong foot in the country in 1970 with the help of a Lieutenant in the U.S Navy by the name Robert Ballard, who acquired a pair of Turkish Kangal dogs and brought them to America. He successfully bred the first litter in 1970. Up until recently, these dogs were not recognized as a separate breed due to their similarity with Akbash. However, due to their unique characteristics, they are now recognized as a separate breed by the American Kennel Club, FCI, and other reputable clubs.

Life Expectancy of Kangal Shepherd Dogs

The average lifespan of a Kangal Shepherd varies from 12 to 15 years. With proper care, medical attention, and a balanced diet, they can outlive their peers and other dogs. The oldest known Anatolian dog lived up to 22 years and died watching her stock.

Cost of buying

₹ 20,000 - ₹ 50,000

The average Anatolian Shepherd dog price can vary from ₹ 20,000 to ₹ 50,000 in India. The cost depends on factors like breed, lineage, and health conditions. Several factors should be considered while purchasing a Kangal Shepherd puppy -

  1. The most essential thing when purchasing a pet is choosing a trustworthy breeder. Ensure that any breeder treats the dogs appropriately and follows the moral breeding procedure.
  2. Ask your breeder to provide health certificates and lineage papers to ensure that the dog is healthy and purebred. Visit the kennel to confirm that there is no inbreeding taking place.
  3. The Kangal Shepherd puppy cost depends on many variables like ancestry, the possibility of show quality, and the breeder's reputation.

Adopt

There is another way to get a puppy home, i.e., to adopt

  1. Give a homeless pet all the love with adoption. Maybe breed-specific rescues, a local animal shelter, or other rescue groups have a puppy up for adoption.
  2. Adoption fees usually cover vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and initial medical care. These fees vary, but they are generally lower than they would be to buy from a breeder.
