Quick Information

The Indian Spitz is a charming dog breed that became very popular in India in the 19th century. Though they do not have an ancient history, they became household names in India. They were originally introduced by the British during their occupation in India and evolved from the German spitz.

These dogs resemble both Samoyed and Pomorenian and are well-adapted to the Indian climate. They became very popular in the 1980s and 1990s because of the strict rules on importing any foreign dog breeds. They are playful and intelligent, and get along with people of all ages. They can be feisty and stubborn at times, but consistent training and socialization helps them adapt well into the families. They are medium-sized dogs and well-suited for apartment living.

Medical Care

Indian Spitz are energetic dog breeds that can live up to 12-16 years, and with good care they can live longer. However, they are prone to some health issues such as -

  • Obesity: Indian Spitz are more prone to weight gain. By over-feeding your dog they gain weight and, in turn, it leads to obesity. This can be prevented by giving them adequate exercise and a balanced diet.

  • Hip dysplasia: This condition is very commonly found in dogs especially as they age. The hip joint does not fit into the hip socket and causes pain and eventually arthritis. This needs immediate medical intervention and treatment depends on the severity of the condition.

  • Canine Distemper: This is a highly contagious viral disease that affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems and can be prevented by vaccination.

  • Heartworm: This is mosquito-transmitted disease that causes cough, lethargy, exercise intolerance, collapse, and sudden death in dogs.

Recommendations to care for senior Indian Spitz dogs

  • Regular Vet Check-ups: As the Indian Spitz ages they are more prone to age-related issues like arthritis, dental problems, and decreased organ functionality. Regular vet check-ups help detect them at the initial stages.
  • Dietary adjustments: As they age their dietary needs also change, so design a well-balanced diet that caters to their nutrient requirements.
  • Senior dog food: You can get dog food that is specifically designed for senior dogs according to their needs
  • Exercise: As they age their energy levels naturally decrease, hence give them mild exercise and do not over-excert them.
  • Mental Stimulation: Indian Spitz are energetic dog breeds that need mental stimulation to keep them lively and active. So, give them puzzles, and engaging toys and socialize them to maintain an overall well-being.

Adopt or Shop: The choice is yours!

Cost of buying

₹ 5,000 - ₹ 30,000

If you want an Indian Spitz for your home, you have two basic options: buying or adopting.

Buying

  • The most essential thing when purchasing a pet is choosing a trustworthy breeder. Ensure that any breeder treats the dogs appropriately and follows the moral breeding procedure.
  • Ask the Indian Spitz breeder to provide health certificates and lineage papers to ensure that the dog is healthy and purebred. Visit the kennel to confirm that there is no in-breeding taking place.
  • The cost of an Indian Spitz puppy depends on many variables like ancestry, possibility of show quality, and breeder reputation.

Adopt

  • Give a homeless pet all the love with adoption. Maybe breed-specific rescues, a local animal shelter, or other rescue groups have a puppy up for adoption.
  • Adoption fees usually cover vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and initial medical care. These fees vary, but they are generally lower than they would be to buy from a breeder.

Now that you know what it takes to raise a undefined, are you ready to take the next step to pet one?

Research: Do thorough research about the breed, its requirements, health issues,  temperaments, traits, and compatibility. See if Indian Spitzs are a good fit for your lifestyle.

Find reputable sources: Before buying an Indian Spitz puppy, look for a trustworthy breeder who practices ethical breeding. Also, check out the local rescues or shelters if you are planning to adopt.

Visit breeder/adoption centers: Make a plan to visit the kennels or adoption centers before going to buy or adopt the dog. Know about their behavior, health, immunization, history, and lineage.

Ask for documentation: Do not miss the health certification, vaccination record, and any other related document from the breeder before buying the puppy. If you are adopting, make sure you inquire about the behavior and past and recent health conditions.

Prepare your home: It is your duty to make a comfortable living space for the dog before bringing it into your life. So make sure you are well aware of the requirements, such as space, time, and commitment needed to have a dog at home. Ensure you have enough supplies, grooming tools, a bed, a food bowl, and other necessities.
