Introduction to the Estrela Mountain Dog

The Estrela Mountain Dog (Cão da Serra da Estrela) is known to be one of the oldest breeds that comes from Portugal. They emerged naturally from the Estrela Mountains and they were excellent guarding livestock, and protecting flocks from wolves and thieves. Their hisor dates back centuries and was shaped by harsh terrain and traditional shepherding.

The breed first came to recognition in 1922, and was formalized in the year 1933. These dogs are still a no.1 choice for guarding but are now guarding loyal families across the world.
