Introduction to the Drever Breed (History)
The Drever has an interesting history rooted in Sweden’s hunting traditions. The breed was bred from the Westphalian Dachsbracke (German hound), which was imported to Sweden in the early 1900s. Besides being short-legged, these dogs were also very good trackers.
By 1947, Swedish breeders had created a larger, and more versatile version of the Westphalian Dachsbracke and called it the Drever. Full recognition was granted to the breed in 1953, making the breed Sweden's premier hunting hound.
Drevers were particularly used to track deer, foxes and hares for their determination and stamina. They were indispensable hunting companions thanks to their ability to navigate dense forests and rugged terrain.
Although Drevers are still used frequently as hunting dogs, their affection and temperament make them equally suitable for the family.
