The breed came from a crossbreeding experiment between wolves with German shepherds. The aim was to get a military working dog that has the loyalty of a dog and the strength of a wolf.
The breed was accepted as a national breed in 1982, and was subsequently registered by the FCI (1999), the UKC (2006) and joined the AKC Miscellaneous Class in 2024. Today, it is famous due to its long life, wolfish appearance, and strong loyalty.
