‘Dog-Free’ Election Promises Linked to Mass Killing of Over 500 Stray Dogs in Telangana

Once again, Telangana has documented a case of animal cruelty. On January 19, in Yacharam village of Ranga Reddy district, 100 plus street dogs were poisoned to death.. This incident follows the apparent mass murder of over 500 dogs. The residents and animal protection organizations are completely shaken up and disturbed by this. A First Information Report(FIR) has been filed. FIR is filed under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Inquiry is in progress, yet no person has been arrested so far.

Dog Culling Linked to Gram Panchayat Election Promises

The dog culling in Telangana is allegedly linked to promises made during the Gram Panchayat elections. Several candidates had promised to make their villages “dog-free” to address the stray dog issue. After winning the elections, local leaders allegedly planned to poison the dogs. According to the complaint, village officials including the ward member, and village secretary worked together. The dogs were initially said to be shifted elsewhere. But later it was allegedly admitted that injections were given. Local residents confirmed that the dogs died soon after. Dead dogs were found in Shyampet, Arepally, Palvancha of late. Post-mortem reports of dogs revealed death due to an unknown toxin.

Pet Parents Demand Justice and Strict Action

Recent incidents have caused fear among pet parents and animal lovers in Telangana. Animal rights groups are demanding strict punishment for those responsible and better monitoring by Gram Panchayats. Many pet parents say killing stray dogs is not a solution. “This is cruel and unacceptable. Dogs deserve protection, not death,” said a pet parent from Hyderabad.
