Dog Ownership To Get Tougher in Ahmedabad

After a heartbreaking incident where a Rottweiler attacked and killed a one-and-a-half-year-old child in Ahmedabad, a city in Gujarat, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has come up with a new set of strict rules for dog owners in the city. The proposed rules aim to make pet ownership safer and more responsible.

The recent tragedy sent shockwaves across the nation. The dog, a Rottweiler, reportedly bit the infant, leading to the child’s death. The news spread quickly and left people demanding stronger rules. AMC responded by drafting what may become the city’s strictest pet ownership rules yet.

Under the proposed guidelines, pet owners will be fully responsible if their dog harms someone or damages property. If a dog bites someone or causes any kind of trouble, the owner will have to pay for the damage. AMC has clearly said that it will not take responsibility in these cases.

According to The Times of India report, the draft also includes rules for walking dogs in public. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times when outside. If the dog is considered dangerous or aggressive, it must also wear a muzzle. The person walking the dog should carry a stick, just in case. These rules are meant to prevent future attacks and make public spaces safer.

Cleanliness is another big part of the draft. Pet owners must make sure their dogs don’t defecate in public areas like parks, roads, and near homes. If it happens, the owner must clean it up right away. The AMC wants dog owners to take their pets to quiet, less crowded places for this.

The draft also bans selling or breeding dogs within AMC limits. If someone is caught doing this, they may be fined, and their dogs could be taken away.

AMC has also included rules to make sure dogs are properly cared for. Owners must provide enough space, clean living conditions, proper food, and medical attention when needed. Officials will be allowed to visit homes to check if these conditions are being met.

Dog registration will also be more closely monitored. If someone gives their pet to someone else, the new owner must apply for a new registration. Also, every dog must be vaccinated against rabies by a vet who is approved by either the Veterinary Council of India or the State Veterinary Council. During inspections, dog owners must show proof of vaccination. If they can’t, their dog’s registration might be cancelled.

These rules are still in the draft phase. AMC might make changes after getting feedback from the public. But for now, the focus is clear: to make the city safer for everyone while encouraging better care and control of pet dogs.
