Jin Min Cat World, India's first exclusive Cat Museum, has officially opened in Mysuru.

Inaugurated in mid-January 2026, Jin Min Cat World is located on Nanjangud Road, opposite Madhuvana Royal Cemetery, in Mysuru, Karnataka. The museum has quickly drawn attention for its distinct concept, dedicated solely to promoting awareness of responsible pet care, with no involvement in animal sales or endorsing specific breeds. The museum remains open to visitors every day from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM, making it easily accessible to families, students, tourists, and pet lovers. While the museum has not officially explained the origin of its name, Jin and Min are words often associated with meanings such as “precious” and “kind”, aligning with the museum’s emphasis on empathy and responsible pet care.

Jin Min Cat World was created by Sharath B.S. in memory of his pet cat Coco, who passed away in a road accident about a year and a half ago. Inspired by this personal loss, Sharath wanted to create a space focused on learning and awareness rather than entertainment. With the opening of Jin Min Cat World, Mysuru joins a small group of cities across the world known for their strong feline culture. Cities such as Istanbul are famous for their street cats, while parts of Japan are known for cat cafes and cat-friendly spaces. The museum reflects a similar appreciation for cats, adapted to an Indian context.

The museum is home to more than 20 cats, including different breeds as well as Indie cats. The cats move freely in carefully designed spaces that resemble a home environment, allowing visitors to observe their natural behavior.

Unlike a typical “petting zoo", the museum encourages visitors to observe rather than handle the animals. Through exhibits and guided information, visitors, especially first-time pet owners, can learn about cat behaviour, grooming, nutrition, vaccination, safety, and the responsibilities involved in caring for a pet. Pets are often welcomed into homes with love, but without proper knowledge, owners may struggle to meet their needs. Spaces like Jin Min Cat World help bridge this gap by giving people the opportunity to learn before adopting a pet.

At a time when pets are increasingly seen as lifestyle choices or status symbols, the museum encourages visitors to view cats as living beings with unique needs, emotions, and personalities, promoting compassion and responsible pet ownership.
