Introduction to Rottweiler Dog Breed
Rottweiler is a muscular, energetic, and robust dog breed. It is also known as Rottweiler Metzgerhund, or Butcher's Dog of Rottweil.
They are believed to be the descendants of mastiffs.
Originally from Germany, these dogs are employed for cattle herding. Recently, these have increasingly been used as guard dogs in police services and for search and rescue operations in natural disaster sites.
Rottweiler dogs are quick learners and can adapt to different roles from family pets to service dogs. They are one of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the USA.

Cost of buying
₹ 15,000 - ₹ 80,000
The cost of a Rottweiler puppy can vary from ₹ 15,000 to ₹ 80,000 depending on breeder, location, availability, lineage, and health; some show quality puppies can cost you more.
If you want a Rottweiler dog for your home, you have two basic options: buying or adopting.
Buying
- The most essential thing when purchasing a pet is choosing a trustworthy breeder. Ensure that any breeder treats the dogs appropriately and follows the moral breeding procedure.
- Ask the Rottweiler dog breeder to provide health certificates and lineage papers to ensure that the dog is healthy and purebred.
- The cost of Rottweiler puppies depends on many variables like ancestry, possibility of show quality and breeder reputation.
Adopt
- Give a homeless pet all the love with adoption. Maybe breed-specific rescues, a local animal shelter, or other rescue groups have a puppy up for adoption.
- Adoption fees usually cover vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and initial medical care. These fees vary, but they are generally lower than they would be to buy from a breeder.

Now that you know what it takes to raise a Labrador, are you ready to take the next step to get one home?
Research: Do thorough research about the breed, its requirements, health issues, temperaments, traits, and compatibility. See if Rottweilers are a good fit for your lifestyle.
Find reputable sources: Before buying a Rottweiler puppy, look for a trustworthy breeder who practices ethical breeding. Also, check out the local rescues or shelters if you are planning to adopt.
Visit breeder/adoption centers: Make a plan to visit the kennels or adoption centers before going to buy or adopt the dog. Know about their behavior, health, immunization, history, and lineage.
Ask for documentation: Do not miss the health certification, vaccination record, and any other related document from the breeder before buying the puppy. If you are adopting, make sure you inquire about the behavior and past and recent health conditions.
Prepare your home: It is your duty to make a comfortable living space for the dog before bringing it into your life. So make sure you are well aware of the requirements, such as space, time, and commitment needed to have a dog at home. Ensure you have enough supplies, grooming tools, a bed, a food bowl, and other necessities.

Common Health Issues in Rottweiler
These are some of the common health problems that are found in Rottweilers recognized by the American Rottweiler Club -
Elbow and Hip dysplasia:
- Elbow Dysplasia - A condition where the elbow joints become weak, and they experience swelling and lameness in forelimbs, elbow bulging and abnormal gait.
- Hip Dysplasia - When hip bones become loose and cause lameness, limping, and cracking or popping of joints.
This condition can be treated if it is detected early by surgery, pain medication, joint supplements, or weight loss.
Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture: Just like humans they have different ligaments like CCLs and ACL. If the CCL is torn in the Rottweilers due to heavy physical activity, high fat diet or low impact exercise it can be treated by orthopedic surgery, and life long joint supplements.
Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV): This is a serious condition in digs that causes bloating in dogs. It is caused if the stomach is bloated by food items or gas, it needs immediate vet intervention and a balanced diet. There is a preventive surgery called gastropexy that veterinarians recommend. It can be performed when neutering or spaying.
Entropion: It is a condition where the eye lid curls inwards. Unless it is treated surgically it causes constant eye irritation and excessive tearing.
Subaortic Stenosis: Heart murmurs are a common condition and are caused due to Subarotic Stenosis(SAS) that can cause sudden death. If this condition is detected by regular vet checks consult a vet cardialogist immediately.
Osteosarcoma: Osteosarcoma or bone cancer in Rottweilers is a painful condition where the dog experiences severe swelling, pain in bones. This can be treated if diagnosed at the early stage.

Recommendations to care for senior Rottweiler dogs
- For senior Rottweilers, regular vet check-ups are recommended to detect health issues like arthritis, or heat conditions.
- A balanced diet for senior dogs - as recommended by the vets - has to be given for their overall well-being and good health conditions.
- Gentle and low-impact exercises are recommended because their natural strength is reduced as they age.
- A very important yet neglected part is the mental stimulation for senior dogs. Keep them active and motivated to ensure they are happy and healthy in their later stages of life.

Quality of life
- Rottweilers have regular but dense coats, they shed moderately. However, once in two years they shed heavily in spring and fall seasons and need regular grooming.
- They should be brushed weekly and bathed regularly. They are a comparatively low-maintenance breed.
- Luckily they are not prone to many skin diseases, but if you find any symptoms it is better to consult the vet.
- They have floppy ears so there are high chances of debris being accumulated, hence regular ear cleaning is a need to avoid any discomfort.
- Brush their teeth at least three times a week to maintain oral hygiene. Please use dog specific toothpastes as human toothpastes can be dangerous because of their content. It is better to start brushing their teeth from their puppy stage as it will not be a problem as they grow older.
