These are some of the common health problems that are found in Rottweilers recognized by the American Rottweiler Club -

Elbow and Hip dysplasia:

• Elbow Dysplasia - A condition where the elbow joints become weak, and they experience swelling and lameness in forelimbs, elbow bulging and abnormal gait.
• Hip Dysplasia - When hip bones become loose and cause lameness, limping, and cracking or popping of joints. 

This condition can be treated if it is detected early by surgery, pain medication, joint supplements, or weight loss. 

Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture: Just like humans they have different ligaments like CCLs and ACL. If the CCL is torn in the Rottweilers due to heavy physical activity, high fat diet or low impact exercise it can be treated by orthopedic surgery, and life long joint supplements. 

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV): This is a serious condition in digs that causes bloating in dogs. It is caused if the stomach is bloated by food items or gas, it needs immediate vet intervention and a balanced diet. There is a preventive surgery called gastropexy that veterinarians recommend. It can be performed when neutering or spaying.

Entropion:  It is a condition where the eye lid curls inwards. Unless it is treated surgically it causes constant eye irritation and excessive tearing.

Subaortic Stenosis: Heart murmurs are a common condition and are caused due to Subarotic Stenosis(SAS) that can cause sudden death. If this condition is detected by regular vet checks consult a vet cardialogist immediately.

Osteosarcoma: Osteosarcoma or bone cancer in Rottweilers is a painful condition where the dog experiences severe swelling, pain in bones. This can be treated if diagnosed at the early stage.

• For senior Rottweilers, regular vet check-ups are recommended to detect health issues like arthritis, or heat conditions. 
• A balanced diet for senior dogs - as recommended by the vets - has to be given for their overall well-being and good health conditions. 
• Gentle and low-impact exercises are recommended because their natural strength is reduced as they age. 
• A very important yet neglected part is the mental stimulation for senior dogs. Keep them active and motivated to ensure they are happy and healthy in their later stages of life.
