Quick Information

Bulldogs also known as ‘English Bulldog’ is a tenacious and courageous dog breed. They are originally from England and were bred in the 13th century for the ‘sport’ of bullbaiting where a pack of dogs fight with the bull, and the spectators bet on the outcome.

They were considered ferocious and also called ‘butcher's dog’ because of their looks and aggressive behavior. After years of selective breeding, they are now calm and easy-going. They get along with kids and make one of the best family pets. These docile, loyal companions adapt well with people of all ages.

Medical Care

There are some common health issues that are found in English Bulldogs that are recognised by the Bulldog Club Of America. Such as -

  • Obesity: The English Bulldogs are prone to obesity and being overweight raises the concern of other health issues. To avoid this, monitor their food intake, make them exercise regularly. Keep in mind that they are very sensitive dog breeds and hence, over-excerting is also not recommended.

  • Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS): This is caused as a combination of anatomical abnormalities and the breed’s flat face, narrowed nose openings, swelling in the larynx, and compressed nasal passages. This leads to difficulty in breathing. Excessive weight also makes the symptoms worse, hence, it’s important to keep your Bulldog fit and healthy. Some dogs need surgical procedures to treat this abnormality.

  • Hip Dysplasia: This is a very common genetic disorder in dogs, including English Bulldogs. This causes joint pains and leads to arthritis as they age. If your dog is diagnosed with hip dysplasia there are long-term treatments that include joint supplements, medication and surgery.

  • Skin Fold Pyoderma: The excessive skin wrinkles in Bulldogs can cause skin issues. Any time your dog gets wet, their wrinkles can capture moisture and provide the perfect habitat for the bacteria and fungus to grow. This is called Skin Fold Pyoderma. Depending on the type of allergy, your dog may need a special diet, medication and shampoos to alleviate the symptoms.

Adopt or Shop: The choice is yours!

Cost of buying

₹ 20,000 - ₹ 80,000

If you want a Bulldog for your home, you have two basic options: buying or adopting.

Buying

  • The most essential thing when purchasing a pet is choosing a trustworthy breeder. Ensure that any breeder treats the dogs appropriately and follows the moral breeding procedure.
  • Ask the breeder to provide health certificates and lineage papers to ensure that the dog is healthy and purebred. Visit the kennel to confirm that there is no in-breeding taking place.
  • The cost of Bulldog puppies depends on many variables like ancestry, possibility of show quality, and breeder reputation.

Adopt

  • Give a homeless pet all the love with adoption. Maybe breed-specific rescues, a local animal shelter, or other rescue groups have a puppy up for adoption.
  • Adoption fees usually cover vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and initial medical care. These fees vary, but they are generally lower than they would be to buy from a breeder.

Now that you know what it takes to raise a Bulldog, are you ready to take the next step to pet one?

Research: Do thorough research about the breed, its requirements, health issues,  temperaments, traits, and compatibility. See if English Bulldogs are a good fit for your lifestyle.

Find reputable sources: Before buying a Bulldog puppy, look for a trustworthy breeder who practices ethical breeding. Also, check out the local rescues or shelters if you are planning to adopt.

Visit breeder/adoption centers: Make a plan to visit the kennels or adoption centers before going to buy or adopt the dog. Know about their behavior, health, immunization, history, and lineage.

Ask for documentation: Do not miss the health certification, vaccination record, and any other related document from the breeder before buying the puppy. If you are adopting, make sure you inquire about the behavior and past and recent health conditions.

Prepare your home: It is your duty to make a comfortable living space for the dog before bringing it into your life. So make sure you are well aware of the requirements, such as space, time, and commitment needed to have a dog at home. Ensure you have enough supplies, grooming tools, a bed, a food bowl, and other necessities.
