Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier, commonly referred to as the Yorkie, is a small yet lively toy dog breed. Their long, curly coats and bold personalities are what they are famous for.  Yorkshire Terriers were originally bred in the counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire in the 1860s. 

Early breeders crossed Scottish weavers’ terriers with other small breeds, for example, the Skye Terrier, Maltese and Dandie Dinmont. But, by 1888, there was a dog named Huddersfield Ben, born in 1865, who was the foundation sire of the breed. 

Having originated as large working terriers, they were miniaturized to form companion animals. The Yorkie first gained official recognition by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885, making this breed a top tier toy dog.

How long do Yorkshire Terriers Live? 

Yorkshire Terriers usually live between 12 and 16 years when taken proper care.

• Intelligent: They enjoy problem-solving activities and are good, quick learners.
• Vocal: Tends to be excessively barking unless properly trained.
• Energetic: Though they are small in size but they are a lively breed.

Sensitive: Is prone to develop separation anxiety if left alone for too long.
