What you should know about French Mastiff

French Mastiffs are muscular, sturdy breeds known for their strength and versatility. Despite their intimidating appearance, these dogs are loyal, affectionate, and can make very good family pets.

In our next section, we shall look into the origin and history of this majestic dog breed.

Origin & history of Dogue de Bordeaux

French Mastiffs, also popularly known as Dogue de Bordeaux, were known in France as early as the 14th century. They were especially very popular in the southern region of Bordeaux and were believed to be the descendants of Bullmastiff and Bulldog.

On the other hand, some theories say that Mastiffs, Neapolitan Mastiffs, Tibetan Mastiffs, and Greek Mastiffs are their close ancestors. In the late 1700s, they were exclusively employed as guard dogs in estates of nobility until the French Revolution, when the Douges’ aristocratic masters were attacked. This breed survived the bloodshed and found work as livestock herders, earning a nickname ‘Butcher’s dog’. This breed is recognized by kennel clubs like AKC and The Kennel Club.
