What you should know about English Cocker Spaniel

The two things you notice when you see an English Cocker Spaniel is their amazingly expressive eyes and lovely silky coat. They are very affectionate, but they were historically hunting dogs.

Spaniels were originally bred in Spain (hence the name "Spaniel"), but they quickly became favorites in England.

By the 1800s, breeders in the UK divided spaniels into two categories: land spaniels and water spaniels. Among the land spaniels, smaller dogs were skilled and trained to hunt Eurasian woodcocks from the dense underbrush, which got them the "Cocker Spaniels" name.

Unlike their American cousins, English Cocker Spaniels stayed hunting dogs for quite a few years. Hunters prized them for their agility, ability to stay on target and effortlessly run across rough terrain. Over time, their affectionate nature and beautiful looks made them popular as family pets.

What makes the Cocker Spaniels Different?

In 1892, the English Kennel Club officially recognized the Cocker Spaniel as a distinct breed. However, both the English and American versions were considered the same breed until 1946. Then they were officially classified separately due to noticeable differences in size, structure, and temperament.

In fact, the English Cocker Spaniel was one of the first ten breeds ever registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1884!

Temperament: Friendly, Intelligent, and Playful

English Cocker Spaniels are very happy and social dogs. They thrive on human interaction and form strong bonds with their families. In fact, their gentle and friendly nature makes them wonderful companions for children and other pets.

These dogs are highly trainable and respond well to positive reinforcement. They are sensitive, so harsh training tactics is a big no. Like their other counterparts, they are prone to separation anxiety so think about getting an English Cocker Spaniel only if you can give them the time they deserve.

In-fact, their bond with humans is so good that English Cocker Spaniels are often used as therapy dogs because of their gentle and empathetic nature!

How to Care for an English Cocker Spaniel?

These energetic dogs need at least 1 hour of daily exercise. With their long, silky coats, regular brushing is the only way to prevent matting. They also need to be taken for professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

A high-protein, balanced diet is mandatory for such a high-energy breed. They love food, and so portion control is the only way to keep them at an ideal weight.

English Cocker Spaniels live 12-15 years with proper care.
