AKITA

The Akita is a noble breed, whose origins stem from more than 1,000 years ago in Japan. These dogs originated from Akita province in northern Japan, where they were bred to hunt and guard the royal family.

Akitas were bred from Matagi Inu, medium-sized hunting dogs famous for their fearlessness while hunting wild boars and bears. With time, they became symbols of good luck, health, and protection in Japan.

The breed nearly went extinct during World War II because of shortages of food and orders by the government to get rid of all non-military dogs. But Akitas were hidden away by dedicated owners in remote areas to preserve the breed. Some Akitas were brought to the U.S. after the war, resulting in the development of the American Akita. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1972.

How Long Do Akitas Live?

With proper care and a healthy lifestyle, the average lifespan of an Akita is 10–14 years.

Akita Temperament and Personality:

• Akitas are really loyal and protective. They love their family and are cautious with strangers.
• They can be quite stubborn. But with proper training, they can be toned.
• Unlike many other breeds, Akitas don’t bark unnecessarily. 
• They are not ideal for homes with small pets as they have a strong prey drive.
• They are very affectionate and bonds deeply with their owners.
