Goffin’s Cockatoo Breed Overview

Goffin’s Cockatoos are very smart, social, amusing, and extroverted. When we say smart, we mean exceptionally intelligent. Their intelligence was put to the test in a scientific investigation where they demonstrated exceptional problem-solving abilities in the field of mechanics.

These adorable white birds bring the greatest aspects of cockatoos in compact packaging. Despite being smaller in stature, goffins have the same demeanour as their larger cockatoo cousins. They also need several hours of cognitive and physical engagement, just like larger cockatoos.

The Goffin's is reasonably quiet when compared to other parrots. But beware, they will not shy away from being vocal when they require attention. They love dancing, so don't be surprised when you see them moving to the beat of your favourite tunes.

They love to chew and can chew through most of the cages. So, ensure that the cage of choice is tough.

Common Health Issues In Goffin's Cockatoo

  1. Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) - This is a virus that damages the immune system of birds with infections as well as their beak, feathers, and nails. According to PetMD, infected birds can spread PBFD to healthy birds via contaminated drinking water and feeding grounds. PBFD is a deadly illness. Since there isn't an effective treatment or cure, prevention is essential. There are several ways pet parents can prolong the life of their bird with PBFD. They include keeping their surroundings clean and providing them with immune-boosting supplements (after consulting your vet).
  2. Feather Picking or Self-Mutilation - This is a behavioral issue caused by factors like medical conditions and psychological or environmental stressors. Medical conditions, such as skin allergies, may cause their skin to itch, which prompts them to pick at their feathers. They can also self-mutilate when left alone for long periods of time without social interaction or stimulation. Consult your veterinarian immediately if you observe them picking their feathers excessively. It is best to identify the cause immediately and work on fixing it.
  3. Respiratory Infections - According to Veterinary Practice, respiratory issues are common among companion parrots. Symptoms to look out for are: cough, frequent sneezing, changes in voice, and sounds when breathing. When stressed or upset, some parrots may hyperventilate, while others may mimic human coughs and sneezes without any respiratory issues. As a result, it's critical to determine whether birds exhibiting respiratory symptoms are actually ill. Health outcomes can be enhanced by early clinical sign detection, prompt diagnosis, and suitable treatment.
  4. Fatty Liver Disease - This is a common issue among birds, often caused due to genetics, diet, and lifestyle. According to Exotic Direct, symptoms include lethargy, inability to fly, laboured breathing, swollen abdomen, and difficulty maintaining balance, among other things. This can be easily managed with diet and exercise. Unlike other pets, it is hard to determine for sure if your bird has gained or lost weight, as their feathers cover them. Hence, weigh them regularly to monitor their weight. Always consult a veterinarian before making drastic changes to their diet.
