Introduction to Caiques
Caique birds are small to medium-sized parrots native to South America, particularly the Amazon Basin. These birds are also popularly known as “Clowns of the parrot world”. In these, two main species are best suited as pets, namely, White Bellied Caique and Black-Headed Caique.
They have an energetic, playful, and affectionate personality. They are very playful and need continuous attention; hence, they are best suited for experienced bird keepers.
Lifespan of Caiques
The adult birds can live up to 20 to 29 years in captivity. With proper diet, medical care, and attention, they can outlive their peers. However, in the wild, their lifespan can be shortened due to predators and harsh environments.
Physical Characteristics of Caiques
- They can grow up to 9 to 10 inches and weigh up to 150 to 170 grams.
- The White-bellied birds have orange thighs, a white belly, green wings, and a black crown.
