Introduction to the Weather Loach
The Weather Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus), or Dojo Loach, is a sturdy freshwater fish prized for its eel-like form and unusual personality. It is so called due to its unusual propensity to be more active in response to changes in barometric pressure, hence a "living weather predictor." Weather Loaches are peaceful, long-lived, and entertaining to watch, therefore excellent community tank residents.
Origin of the Weather Loach
Weather Loaches are found in East Asia and live in sluggish streams, ponds, and rice paddies. They thrive in well-oxygenated cool water and are inclined to dig in soft bottom environments. While invasive in some parts, they are a popular aquarium fish around the world due to their interactive and adaptable nature.
Temperament of the Weather Loach
Weather Loaches are social, curious, and bottom-dwelling fish. They enjoy digging and raking their snouts in the sand for food. While shy at first, they become quite active and even play with their owners. Keeping them in small groups (3–5) also alleviates stress and brings out the social side.
Weather Loach Compatibility with Other Fish
Weather Loaches do well in community tanks with other coldwater or subtropical fish such as:
- Goldfish
- White Cloud Mountain Minnows
- Danios
- Rosy Barbs
Do not keep them with:
- Aggressive cichlids
- Very tiny fry (they will be devoured)
- Temperature-loving tropical fish
Price Range for the Weather Loach
Weather Loaches are abundant and inexpensive and usually range from ₹150–₹500 ($2–$6) in price depending on size and source. Their longevity and hardiness make them a thrifty choice for aquarists.
