The Volitan Lionfish, also called red lionfish, has long fin “wings” and bold stripes of red, brown, or maroon across a white or yellowish body.

It’s popular in marine aquariums because it looks dramatic, almost like a sea dragon.

But it’s also unique because it has venomous spines (on its dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins) that defend it from predators.

Volitan Lionfish Origin

  1. Native to the Indo-Pacific region — that means places like western Australia, parts of Southeast Asia, southern Japan, Korea, and many Pacific islands.
  2. It was first scientifically described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.
  3. Over time, it has been introduced (by accident or trade) to places like the Caribbean Sea, the east coasts of the US, and other places where it is not native. There, it can become an “invasive species.”

Temperament

  1. Mostly solitary when grown up: it likes living on its own and defends its space.
  2. It is more active at night as it hunts during dusk as well as at night, yet rests during the day.
  3. Males may show more aggression, notably when mating. They can be much more aggressive when they act to protect their territory.

Compatibility

  1. Fish it can live with: marine fish (Groupers, Large marine angelfish, Foxface/rabbit fish, Butterfly fish) that happen to be calm, as well as mid-to-larger-sized fish that won’t nudge spines or steal food.
  2. Do not get small fish, which lionfish swallow, or aggressive species that hurt fins, or sensitive species. Because lionfish have venomous spines, caution is needed. Therefore, pets and handlers should be careful in that case.

Volitan Lionfish Price Range

So in India, a Volitan Lionfish might cost approximately ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 or more, depending on:

  1. Its size (juvenile vs adult)
  2. How rare the variant or color is
  3. Shipping/import cost, or whether it is captive-bred vs wild-caught
  4. Location (metros typically more expensive)
  5. Health and acclimatization status

₹10,000 - ₹30,000

Water Temperature

Water Type

Salt Water

PH Level

8.1 - 8.4

Volitan Lionfish Tank Type

  1. Saltwater aquarium (marine water). Not freshwater or brackish.

Aquarium Size

  1. Needs a fairly large tank because full-grown lionfish can reach up to about 38-45 cm in length.
  2. Also, they like room to swim and hide. So the tank should be spacious.

Water Conditions

  1. Temperature: 22-29 °C (tropical sea water)
  2. pH level: Marine water pH, typically around 8.1-8.4 (slightly alkaline)
  3. Water hardness/Salinity: Normal seawater salinity; hardness as typical for reef or reef-edge salt water. (They are reef-associated fish.)

Environment Needs

  1. Hiding spaces: caves, rock crevices, coral structures — they like hiding during the day.
  2. Open areas for swimming and hunting at night.
  3. Lighting: moderate — intense lighting is not needed because they avoid bright light in daytime.
  4. Substrate (sea bottom): a mix of sand and rock, so prey also lives in it.

Volitan Lionfish Nutritional Guide

₹200 - ₹ 300

Volitan Lionfish Diet Type

  1. Carnivore: eats meat-based foods.

Suitable Foods

  1. Live or frozen small fish
  2. Crustaceans (shrimp, small crabs)
  3. Other invertebrates
  4. Sometimes foods like frozen mysis or brine shrimp
  5. Pellets or chunks made for carnivorous marine fish are good as a supplement

Feeding Frequency & Tips

  1. Feed maybe once per day or every other day for adults (depends on size). Juveniles may eat more often.
  2. Give portions they can finish in a few minutes, so no leftover rotting food.
  3. Rotate diet (a mix of types) so they get good nutrition.

Volitan Lionfish Health & Care

Common Health Issues

Fin rot

White spot / ick

Bacterial infections

Swim bladder disease

Velvet disease (yellowish-brown spots on the skin)

Mouth fungus

Signs of good health

Active

Bright coloration

Good apetite

Signs of sickness

Loss of appetite

Lethargic behaviour

Frequent hiding

Dull coloring

Tattered fins

Common Health Issues

  1. Stress from bad water (pollution, wrong temperature)
  2. Issues from poor diet: not enough protein or variety
  3. Infection (bacterial or fungal) if the water is dirty or if it injures itself
  4. Overgrowth of algae or parasites if the tank is not cleaned

Symptoms to Watch

  1. Loss of appetite
  2. Fins clamped, not spread
  3. Discoloration or spots
  4. Excess mucus or sores
  5. Lethargy (not moving much)

Treatment

  1. Quarantine new fish before you go to introduce them to the tank.
  2. You must keep the water quite clean by doing regular partial water changes.
  3. Maintain good filtration.
  4. Isolate, then use marine fish-safe treatments (antibacterial/fungal) if they show infection signs.

Volitan Lionfish General Health Tips

  1. Keep water conditions stable (temperature, pH, salinity). Sudden changes stress them.
  2. Clean the tank regularly.
  3. Do not crowd the tank.
  4. Handle carefully to avoid contact with venomous spines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Volitan Lionfish aggressive?

Yes, Volitan Lionfish are predatory and can be aggressive towards smaller tank mates that they perceive as prey. They are generally solitary and should be housed with larger, more robust fish that are not easily intimidated or seen as food.

Are Volitan Lionfish suitable for beginners?

Due to their specialized care requirements, including their diet, tank size needs, and potential aggression towards tank mates, Volitan Lionfish are generally recommended for experienced aquarists who are familiar with managing large predatory fish.

Do Volitan Lionfish require special care?

Yes, Volitan Lionfish require careful consideration of their venomous spines. Handlers should avoid contact with these spines, as they can cause painful stings and, in rare cases, allergic reactions. Handling with a net and using caution during tank maintenance is crucial.
