Introduction of the Common Goldfish
The Common Goldfish (Carassius auratus) ranks among the most often kept aquarium fishes globally and this for a very good reason. It is characterized by its durability, active character, and shining golden color, thus it is usually the first pet for novice aquarists.
In contrast to its fancy relatives, the Common Goldfish has a narrow body and one tail which grants it quickness and endurance. These fish are characterized as friendly, social, and easy to care for if a proper amount of space and water cleanliness is provided. Goldfish are simple to look at but they do have a lot of character and can live long years with proper maintenance.
Origin of the Common Goldfish
The Common Goldfish can be traced back to the Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio), a species living in East Asia. Fishkeeping started in China around 1000 years ago, during which time the technique of selective breeding resulted in the large variety of goldfish types present today.
The Common Goldfish is still the closest to its ancestral form, and is appreciated for its hardiness, versatility, and innate beauty. Nowadays, they are found in aquariums, ponds, and even outdoor water gardens throughout the world.
Temperament of the Common Goldfish
Common Goldfish are gentle, sociable, and very active in their swimming habits. They like to wander around, sift through the bottom, and play with other fish. The very little aggressiveness they display makes them suitable for community tanks along with other peaceful species.
On the other hand, they are quick eaters thus it would be very difficult for slower types of goldfish often called "fancy goldfish" (Oranda or Black Moor) to get a fair share of the food if kept together.
Common Goldfish Compatibility with Other Fish
The most common goldfish are in the same group of fish as other cold-water, peaceful fish of the same size. It is advisable to avoid tropical and fin-nipping fish species.
Best Tankmates:
- Goldfish Comet
- Goldfish Shubunkin
- Dojo Loach
- White Cloud Mountain Minnow
Goldfish are elegant and gentle types that are slow or fragile should not be in the tank as they will not be able to eat or swim as fast as others.
Common Goldfish Price Range
Common Goldfish are not expensive and available easily. The price of Common Goldfish in India usually depends on the size and color and ranges from ₹80 to ₹300.

The common goldfish is an omnivorous fish with a great appetite that mostly eats mini and major food. The main ingredients of a goldfish diet should be plant matter and protein. The following can be considered as the top three fish type diets:
- Goldfish pellets or flakes,
- Blanched vegetables (peas, spinach, zucchini),
- Live or frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms (occasionally as treats).
Two small meals a day will be perfect; just enough food that the fish can eat in 2-3 minutes. Overfeeding may cause troubles such as swim bladder and digestive and other system issues.
